Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 will transport listeners to a world of childhood wonder and familial warmth, where memories are cherished and time seems to stand still. With its gentle rhythms and tender harmonies, Knoxville: Summer of 1915 captures the essence of a fleeting moment in time. Then, the ASO will perform Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 ‘Romantic.’ Composed in the late 19th century, it captures the essence of the Romantic era with its expansive melodies, lush harmonies, and majestic orchestration.
The evening will conclude with Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte, inspired by the minuet of Haydn’s String Quartet in F (Op. 77, No. 2.) Shaw is the recipient of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Music, several Grammy awards, an honorary doctorate from Yale, and a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. She has worked with a range of artists including Rosalía, Renée Fleming, and Yo Yo Ma, and she has contributed music to films and tv series including Fleishman is in Trouble, Bombshell, Yellowjackets, Maid, Dark, and Beyonce’s Homecoming.
